Read about the traditional 4 Cs in diamond standards.
Certification
It’s not easy to tell a real diamond from a fake diamond by simply using your eyes. It is even more difficult to tell between the different grades of diamonds without professional help. Since you are paying a costly amount for your diamond, it is best that you know for sure what you are paying for is worth it!
Usually all diamonds sold by jewellers come together with a grading and this grading qualifies the exact price of the diamond. However, the thing to take note of is which company did the diamond grading. The most respected and recognised diamond grading company is the Gemmological Institute of America or GIA. Most jewellers around the world make use of the standard set up by the GIA.
Unfortunately, many other jewellers use their own grading scales. They commonly over grade their own diamonds, therefore marking up their prices and sell lower grade diamonds is thought they belong to a higher grade. It is perfectly legal for the jeweller to do so, unless the jeweller intentionally misled you into thinking that they are using a grading scale which they are not.
Don’t be afraid to ask outright for the diamond certification. The jeweller will have nothing to hide unless they are out to scam you.
