Before you shop for your ring band you need to know what size ring you need so you can buy proper fitting rings. However finger size changes as one grows fatter or thinner and changes even throughout the day depending on temperature or work activity.
One way to determine a comfortable ring size is to measure the second knuckle of the finger (the widest part of the finger) and the place where the ring will sit on the finger. The ring band diameter should be wider than its sitting place but smaller than the knuckle. This way, the ring will not be too small, but will not fall out of the finger either.
Measuring of the finger can be done using an existing ring with a professional ring sizer mandrel, a professional ring sizer, a ring size chart or finger size strip.
Finger size strip
Professional finger size strips are available for measuring of finger sizes. However, you won’t do much worse by measuring your finger with a ‘home-made’ finger size strip. Simply have a strip of paper or string, wrap it around your finger and mark where the ends meet. Measure this length to get the circumference of your finger. Divide it by 3.14 if you’re looking for finger diameter. However finger measurements using strips are not very accurate. Finger measurements differ depending on how tightly you wrap the paper or string around it.
Ring Size Chart
Ring size charts can come in pictures or tables and are freely available online. These charts allow you to compare your finger size to the pictures directly or show the corresponding ring size that relates to your finger circumference or diameter. Ring sizes are either in alphabets or numerical notation and may include half and quarter sizes. However, ring size charts vary from company to company depending on individual practices or country. A finger circumference of 50 mm may turn up as a size 10 on one chart and size 5¼ on another. Ring sizes provide only a rough comparison to begin with. It is best to get your finger measured by the jeweller if you’re buying from a store or provide exact finger measurements if you’re buying online.
