Ring Mandrels
If you have existing rings which already fit comfortably on your finger, the best way to get a right size for the next ring is to simply use the current one as a standard. Go to a jeweller with the existing ring and use it with a mandrel. The mandrel is a tapered rod that allows the ring to slide onto. When the ring slides to a comfortable fit on the mandrel, the diameter at that point is taken and used for the diameter of your ring. However different jewellers have their own methods of using the mandrel and determining what is a ‘comfortable fit’.
Ring Sizers
The best way to size your ring correctly is getting it measured by the jeweller. Ring size is not the same as finger size. A professional jeweller can determine proper ring size using a set of steel gauge-rings. These steel gauges come in various dimension and are known as ring sizers.
Ring Resizing
Sometimes, the finger of a person changes drastically enough to require resizing of existing rings. Usually, a ring can be resize either up or down by 1 or 2 sizes easily. Your jeweller will be more than willingly to do it for you for a fee. However, certain rings cannot be resized due to its design or gem setting.
A ring band doesn’t have to be a perfect fit, our finger size changes throughout the day anyway. In general, ring bands should be sized to fit the largest measurement of the finger. It’s always preferable to have a loose ring than a ring that doesn’t fit at all. Of course, loose doesn’t mean that it will drop out of the finger on its own.
