Before you buy a diamond ring band, there are two main things you need to know; the ring band and the diamond.
The main features of your ring band are size, material, ring finish and if gemstones are used, the setting. Your ring band should of course fit your fingers or your spouse’s finger nicely. Finger width may change over time; luckily your jeweller can usually resize your ring bands for a better fit.
The metals used to make the ring bands will determine its colour; the malleability of the metals will also restrict its design. Some people are also allergic to certain metals, making it necessary to limit the type of metals used in the ring band. Ring band finish determines the appearance of the ring and finally, setting not only affects the overall design, but also affects how the gemstone will sit on the ring.
As for diamonds, they are commonly graded based on the 4 Cs; Carat, Clarity, Colour and Cut. Carat refers to the weight of the diamond; clarity refers to its purity, colour is its hue and cut is the man-made modification that determines its shine. Sometimes a fifth C is also important, especially for the not so affluent – Cost.
In the end, a diamond ring band is not the ring band or its diamond but the combination of the two. Having a beautiful ring band and a beautiful diamond doesn’t always make for a beautiful diamond ring band.
